Magistrate arrested and charged amid ICAC investigation

South Australian magistrate Robert Harrap has been arrested and charged following an investigation by the state's Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (ICAC).

He has been charged with deception, conspiracy to commit abuse of public office and conspiracy to attempt to obstruct or pervert the course of justice or due administration of the law.

It is alleged that on two occasions in May 2020, Magistrate Harrap misrepresented who was driving his government-issued vehicle at the time it was observed committing traffic offences.

The investigation is ongoing and other charges may be laid.

Chief Magistrate Mary-Louise Hribal said the ICAC informed her of the charges against Harrap on June 29 2020.

She said he would not sit as a magistrate or conduct any court business until the matters have been finalised.
