NSW police seize drug GBL worth $8.5m

Police have seized approximately 1059 kg of gamma-butyrolactone with an estimated potential street value of almost $8.5 million at various Sydney locations after stopping a hire car in the inner city.

Officers pulled over a
37-year-old man in Darlinghurst on May 15 2020 and allegedly found ice inside his vehicle, along with 27 kilograms of GBL, $20,000 in cash and electronic devices and documents allegedly linked to the supply of prohibited drugs.

The driver was charged with supplying a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime. He was refused bail after appearing before Parramatta Bail Court on May 15 2020.

Further inquiries led police to a Regents Park factory where 724kg of GBL was seized and a home laboratory in Hunters Hill where 56kg of GBL was found. A crime scene warrant was executed at a storage facility in Granville, in Sydney's west, where a further 252kg of GBL was found.
