Melbourne café arson: CCTV released

On December 10 2019, police released CCTV footage of two men causing an explosion inside a family-owned café in east Melbourne.

The suspects broke into the store in Brice Avenue, Mooroolbark, on July 1 2019 at about 2.30am before dousing the inside of the café with fuel and setting it alight. As one man attempted to throw a flame onto the fuel, he set his sleeve on fire.

Victoria Police said the incident was well-planned but poorly executed. It is believed the same two men stole a white Toyota Celica from The Centreway in Ringwood about half an hour before the fire. The car was later found burnt out in Kenross Court, Wantirna.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers, particularly if someone has a burn injury to the left arm. The motive remains unclear.

Café owner Martin Shaw is offerering a cash reward for information. Mr Shaw watched the fire burning while calling the emergency services as the café security system is linked to his phone.
