Man charged with burning down Mount Helena home

A 34-year-old man has been charged with causing criminal damage by fire, after allegedly causing $500,000 damage to a home in the Perth Hills.

40 firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the blaze, which caused the two-storey home to collapse.

The blaze also sparked bushfires in the area when it spread to neighbouring properties.

Neighbours described hearing two explosions and seeing flames billowing from the house before it became fully engulfed.

Police had been called to a disturbance at the property shortly before fire crews were alerted to the blaze.

The 34-year-old man was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

It is understood that he was injured when escaping the flames through a second floor window.
