Melbourne teenager 'left to die' by BMW driver

A 13-year-old girl is fighting for life in hospital after a hit-and-run in Melbourne's north.

Police said the teenager was hit while riding her bike at the corner of Bell and Sussex streets at Coburg just after 8.00pm.

The driver of the car, believed to be a dark-coloured BMW, stopped briefly before leaving the scene.

Police believe either the driver or a passenger got out of the car and looked at the scene before driving off.

According to police, there would be damage to the front of the car, the windscreen and the left-hand mirror.

The girl is in a critical condition in hospital with head injuries and broken bones.

She is in an induced coma.

Off-duty SES worker Damian Nippard was one of the first people to arrive at the scene, and provided first aid until an ambulance arrived.

An off-duty nurse and paramedic also helped to treat the girl.

Police are urging anyone who saw the incident or knows the identity of the driver to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
