The Health Care Complaints Commission recently prosecuted Mr Ashleigh Edward Jarrold, a dental practitioner, before the Dental Tribunal. The complaints related to Mr Jarrold’s criminal convictions for eight offences in relation to producing, disseminating and possessing child pornography, indecent assault, and grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity. Mr Jarrold was sentenced to over seven years imprisonment in October 2009.

The Commission argued that Mr Jarrold was not a suitable person to hold registration as a dentist.

In its decision of 22 November 2011, the Tribunal found Mr Jarrold was not an appropriate person to practice dentistry or provide any other health service. The Tribunal noted that Mr Jarrold “is never likely to overcome the deficits in his character revealed by the conduct subject of the convictions”

The Tribunal ordered that Mr Jarrold be disqualified from being registered as a dentist until 16 February 2020. It also ordered that he is prohibited from providing any health service until 16 February 2020, and is only allowed to provide these health services on the condition that he gains registration as a health professional.
